#170 | Adulthood | When Are You An Adult?

Episode Summary

Ricky and Flav ask when someone truly becomes an adult. Is adulthood defined by turning 18, earning money, leaving home, getting married, becoming a parent or accepting responsibility for other people? Their memories cover independent school mornings, National Insurance numbers, first jobs at Woolworths, early mobile-phone contracts and the teenage belief that a proper adult had a house, a car, children and a beard.

The conversation moves through maturity, self-confidence and the financial lessons nobody teaches at school. University overdrafts, credit cards, mortgages, transport and providing for a family all become markers of responsibility. The lads also debate legal adulthood, the age of consent and whether 16 and 17-year-olds should vote, using Brexit and political knowledge to test the difference between legal rights, lived experience and emotional maturity.

A listener offers a simpler definition: adulthood means letting go of what you cannot control, becoming comfortable with yourself and keeping your family and friends safe. The episode finishes with a relationship dilemma and a Something Only You Know confession about an airport accident, missing underwear and a week of business meetings.

Ricky: Does it make you happy? Seeing. Tom York. What was that face?

00:00:10.46
Flav: Just waiting to see what… What are you going to say?

00:00:13.28
Ricky: Tom York is, ah for me anyway, I don't follow him on Instagram and I don't imagine he posts a lot of his behind the scenes, him making a coffee or anything like that content. So when it comes…

00:00:25.68
Ricky: onto your screen are you immediately like Sitting up.

00:00:31.02
Flav: Uh…

00:00:30.97
Ricky: Okay, shut up. Wife, shut up. My favourite show's on.

00:00:35.12
Flav: you don't he He rarely does interviews. And… There is an air of… mysticism about him. um And there always has been. Like, they've been…

00:00:45.83
Flav: Tom Yorkham. It's been weird. about the media since. after the bends. right when when when the bends came out amazing album to this day stands up like

00:00:56.14
Ricky: Hmm.

00:00:56.62
Flav: i've come I've come back to the bend. recently. And that's what's great about… If there's a band that consistently puts out great albums. You can flit about them. You can spend time with one.

00:01:08.88
Flav: like a year ago I was listening to Amnesiac over and over and over again, but for a long time I ignored Amnesiac.

00:01:13.74
Ricky: Yeah.

00:01:15.69
Flav: or it I just felt like it was the inferior. little brother to today.

00:01:20.94
Ricky: Right.

00:01:21.39
Flav: And so I didn't give due diligence. And… When I did, I fell in love with that album. like it's It certainly has been my favorite Radiohead album for ages. Now that's going to come across as like, oh God, what are you on about? How can you pick? And the no one agrees with that. It's such a left field take.

00:01:39.97
Flav: Or you're trying too hard.

00:01:41.65
Ricky: Yeah.

00:01:42.18
Flav: right it and I appreciate that I'm just saying

00:01:41.94
Ricky: yeah yeah yeah

00:01:44.83
Flav: for a period of time it was my favorite album of theirs to listen to and a large part of that would have been down to the fact that… I'd listen to all the others to death. I've listened to In Rainbows, OK Computer, The Bends. Kid A to absolute death.

00:01:59.52
Ricky: um

00:02:00.54
Flav: Uh, Moonshade Paul, just over and over again, you need a break.

00:02:04.84
Ricky: Yeah yeah yeah.

00:02:05.64
Flav: you have enough time and you can go back to it. So I think that's what in the amnesiac gave been, you know, what else is going to, you would, you're going to tell me to fuck off. The…

00:02:13.07
Ricky: Oh, please do.

00:02:13.83
Flav: The B-side. The B-sides or the additional tracks to Kid A. There are some… There's three absolute bangers on there. There's also… Radiohead's worst song in my opinion on there as well.

00:02:26.09
Flav: but

00:02:26.24
Ricky: what Why would I tell you to fuck off about the B-sides?

00:02:32.18
Flav: Because… It's like, oh god oh, you've heard…

00:02:34.56
Ricky: Here we go.

00:02:35.54
Flav: You've heard the B-sides.

00:02:35.95
Ricky: Go on.

00:02:36.50
Flav: of Oh, you listen to the B-sides. You're really into Radiohead, are you? Because you've been listening. you You've gone to the B-sides. It's that kind of… i if i If I was on… tiktok and i've made a tiktok about it i think go fucking shut your mouth Brick. But… um There is a…

00:02:51.46
Flav: and And obviously they weren't on the original In Rainbows album. There's like an extended version now. It's called This Too.

00:02:58.71
Ricky: Right.

00:02:59.33
Flav: And it's only short. It's like eight. eight tracks and a couple of sort of experimentally sounded ones. But… um Go slowly.

00:03:09.94
Flav: And last flowers are just… ah Incredible records. But bangers and mash, I hate. I hate it. It's the only Ray Harris song I'd listen to.

00:03:18.77
Ricky: They've got a song called Bangers and Mash.

00:03:20.86
Flav: bangers and mash Bangers mash. Yeah.

00:03:23.62
Ricky: It's my favorite dinner. Bangers and Macs.

00:03:25.46
Flav: Yeah. Yeah, and um I've got it favourited for some reason, maybe because I… I don't know why uh Um… Yeah, anyway, so yeah you don't…

00:03:36.73
Flav: I've gone all around houses here, but… My point is, is that after the bends and after OK Computer, he just like… He just… faded away. intentionally.

00:03:48.01
Flav: And… The only time you sort of saw him being interviewed, like in the Zane Lowe interview, he just comes across a awkward.

00:03:54.33
Ricky: Mmm.

00:03:55.14
Flav: So I've never really been interested. like ah yeah there's ah There's a documentary called. How does it disappear completely? I should probably mention it a couple of times.

00:04:01.92
Ricky: Yes. Yeah. Yeah.

00:04:03.21
Flav: Really good. And it's it's essentially about how do they follow up the greatest one of the greatest records ever. been produced in okay computer what do they do next and the in the and the pressure of that and the having to make the next thing. And. what would people expect compared to what…

00:04:19.47
Flav: do they want to do and it's a massive shift like today sounds almost nothing like Okay, computer.

00:04:23.100
Ricky: Hmm.

00:04:24.61
Flav: Um, So… ah He talks a lot in that interview about… filling. you know just not wanting to be spoken to and not wanting to have to explain the music and not he doesn't want to give meanings to what they are he just leaves it to people to figure out So…

00:04:43.14
Flav: Bye. When this you sent me a link to it and that's first time I saw it

00:04:47.98
Ricky: Oh, I was expecting you to reply. you're You're the 57th person to send me this. Thanks mate.

00:04:53.95
Flav: No, you're the first person. I didn't even know it was happening

00:04:56.18
Ricky: Peace.

00:04:58.07
Flav: And this obviously obviously comes back from… um the when when he was getting… i think it was a hall of fame or some sort of award somewhere. And Harry Styles gave the speech about how much he loves Radiohead.

00:05:10.24
Ricky: Yeah.

00:05:10.92
Flav: And Tom York's in the crowd. and it's great the speech is great it's excellent it's funny I really like Harry Styles as well I think he's great quite like his music and I just i like him as a person.

00:05:21.93
Flav: So just having them two. Together. and then being and Tom York being completely relaxed. It was kind of a unique viewing experience. I loved it.

00:05:31.93
Ricky: Yeah, so there is… Is it Rolling Stone?

00:05:34.31
Flav: Yeah.

00:05:35.35
Ricky: Um… There is an interview that is out and it's Tom York. and harry styles sitting down having a little chat and that uh I… and when it came across my screen i was like i haven't seen tom york speaking i don't know i don't even know if i've ever seen him

00:05:53.74
Flav: It's weird and he's elusive

00:05:54.04
Ricky: That kind kind of like sitting down and and chatting rather than, you know, back in the 90s at an award ceremony, like being kind of. uh awkward and not really wanting to say much and stuff But seeing him sit down.

00:06:07.95
Ricky: and chatting and it was like very bright. Do you know what I mean? Like it just, I was like, fuck, I haven't, I've never seen him in this. Like, sorry about the pun, but…

00:06:17.51
Flav: Yeah.

00:06:17.81
Ricky: uh in um In forever. But how does it make you feel?

00:06:24.72
Flav: and He looked class, I thought. Tom York.

00:06:27.40
Ricky: Did you? Yeah, okay.

00:06:28.93
Flav: You look…

00:06:28.86
Ricky: What, like clothes or…?

00:06:30.27
Flav: Really well dressed.

00:06:31.43
Ricky: Yeah.

00:06:31.100
Flav: Like the sort of worn denim jean jacket. Double denim, which I like. And those Birkenstocks, I ah really rate those as well. The Adderley feet.

00:06:40.46
Ricky: Yep.

00:06:41.28
Flav: um And then he whacked on a pair of bins at one stage, and I was like, they're fucking class, those glasses. And it stands… And i'm love I'd love to get a pair. I want to dress like that immediately.

00:06:50.29
Ricky: ah

00:06:51.46
Flav: Everything he's wearing.

00:06:53.06
Ricky: ah

00:06:53.53
Flav: I have the two style icons there. like Harry Styles is one.

00:06:57.24
Ricky: Yeah.

00:06:57.79
Flav: But I think Tommy will do better.

00:07:00.68
Ricky: Harry Styles, he was out running and I liked his shorts because they were like short shorts, but running style shorts. and i took a screen grab of the shorts because it had the logo on there and i was like i'm fucking gonna get myself a pair of those because i like them

00:07:14.67
Flav: Yeah.

00:07:15.31
Ricky: 175 pound. I was like, no, I'm not going to get them. I'll just get ASOS. Short Shorts.

00:07:22.27
Flav: i think I also thought in the interview… The… Harry Styles We're sort of uncomfortable in. Tom York's presence.

00:07:31.90
Ricky: Oh yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah

00:07:33.00
Flav: He's he you could see he's enamored buy him. and yeah We know that… Radiohead's, Harry Styles' favorite band. And it's like… i couldn't sit there and be calm with him and it looked like he was trying to not be.

00:07:48.54
Flav: overawed by the situation that's what I felt whereas Tom Tom York kind of felt like…

00:07:50.92
Ricky: Yeah.

00:07:55.77
Flav: He felt completely normal and relaxed and I think it was in that environment with a fellow artist. that that he felt comfortable because it wasn't like journalists asking them questions. But Harry Styles, like you can tell he's like… I can't Almost like I can't believe I'm sitting in front of you.

00:08:11.11
Ricky: Yeah, I felt.

00:08:11.76
Flav: But he's trying hardest to be normal

00:08:13.78
Ricky: yeah it kind of felt like you know where you have um Imposter syndrome. Where… You know, he thinks Tom York is a genius, right?

00:08:26.14
Ricky: Um, And he is… He'll probably see himself as a pop star. bit of an icon you know that type So like. comparatively speaking, about their music. very different and there are you know a lot of people feel differently about them as people.

00:08:44.10
Ricky: and as ah musicians so it is kind of like you're sitting down with God. and having a chat but also You've got that fanboy.

00:08:51.31
Flav: Yeah.

00:08:54.16
Ricky: perspective as well that you can't kind of like if I was to sit down with I don't know let's just say Noel Gallagher I'd have to try really hard not to show. that i'm a fan boy and that i appreciate his music and appreciate him but not go into details of the core change here and there and this that and the other and when you said this and because it would be like oh fucking hell that's a bit it's a bit intense so you've got to try and balance I go through this in my head all the time.

00:09:22.92
Ricky: like if i was to meet them uh like how how would you like suppress the Oh my God, it's no Gallagher.

00:09:31.06
Flav: Yeah.

00:09:32.21
Ricky: to

00:09:32.10
Flav: Yeah.

00:09:33.10
Ricky: Just playing it cool. about being that guy

00:09:36.30
Flav: But but but but by by not trying to… demonstrate that you're overall. or by the situation.

00:09:43.83
Ricky: Yeah.

00:09:44.17
Flav: you almost come across as like you're trying to.

00:09:47.45
Ricky: Yes.

00:09:47.61
Flav: that's what that's what That's what Harry Styles comes across like this. He's like, I i want i don't want this to be… Ew. It's mental because he's one of the most famous people on earth, Harry Styles, all right?

00:09:58.62
Ricky: Yeah.

00:09:59.00
Flav: More people could pick up. Harry Styles on the street and radio and than than Tom York. But you can kind of feel like… I don't know It was it was good. It was nice. It was it was it was sweet.

00:10:08.88
Ricky: how How do you feel about um it was Harry Styles? like i mean you just mentioned that uh you you quite like him but it's it's not like um I don't know.

00:10:19.91
Ricky: the The meeting of minds. if If you would be like a a muso. and saying, oh, Harry Styles. maybe doesn't write his music and doesn't compose it, doesn't do this. And then you've got.

00:10:32.21
Ricky: you know, a pop star. a child kind of like icon for the teeny boppers interviewing my fucking, my goat.

00:10:40.89
Flav: i No, fine. I think he managed i think Harry Styles has managed to shift away from that One Direction bollocks.

00:10:46.91
Ricky: Mmm.

00:10:47.63
Flav: um both in the way he dresses and carries himself, but I think he does compose and write a lot of his own music as well. And if you listen to any of his… last few albums. Oli really, really likes him.

00:10:59.92
Flav: So, therefore, I've had to sit in the car and listen to albums his albums a few times.

00:11:04.47
Ricky: Yeah.

00:11:05.37
Flav: More than a few times actually.

00:11:06.70
Ricky: Yeah.

00:11:07.27
Flav: Uh, And… um he's He's good. He's really good.

00:11:12.22
Ricky: Might.

00:11:12.21
Flav: He's like… it' sort Shalom.

00:11:14.39
Ricky: Yeah, ah my my daughter, he is ah number one.

00:11:18.60
Flav: Yes.

00:11:18.35
Ricky: In our house.

00:11:19.64
Flav: Yeah.

00:11:19.82
Ricky: and the albums play over and over and over and she goes on about him all the time

00:11:26.33
Flav: Yeah.

00:11:27.24
Ricky: So I've got a lot of a lot of time for for Harry.

00:11:30.44
Flav: Because you'd you'd make an assumption about… One Direction, right? and what is

00:11:33.91
Ricky: ah Completely.

00:11:35.16
Flav: he's obviously just wanted to get into the music industry and did it through that reality tv method and generally these people aren't very talented they maybe can sing and then they create a boy band But there's there was there's a lot more to him.

00:11:46.84
Flav: than not.

00:11:46.85
Ricky: Yeah.

00:11:48.40
Flav: the I think this was his second studio album as a solo artist.

00:11:53.01
Ricky: What are you putting on your face?

00:11:54.31
Flav: Moisturizer. I forgot to moisturize. My face was stinging.

00:11:57.17
Ricky: Stinging.

00:11:58.46
Flav: Yeah, I'll get to asking.

00:11:59.48
Ricky: Uh… Okay.

00:12:00.74
Flav: Sorry. Make this stuff. Glory old men expert.

00:12:03.53
Ricky: What is it?

00:12:06.01
Flav: It's a fucking scam.

00:12:05.84
Ricky: Shit. Scam? Why is it well expensive?

00:12:09.58
Flav: Yes, 13 quid.

00:12:11.26
Ricky: Oh my god!

00:12:13.06
Flav: And… You get about. We're at 10 days worth out of it. If you use it once a day.

00:12:18.63
Ricky: I…

00:12:20.06
Flav: Twice a day?

00:12:20.16
Ricky: ah I use… aloe vera Lidl Couple of quid.

00:12:25.72
Flav: yeah

00:12:26.50
Ricky: Mate, you're fucking my… It's…

00:12:28.01
Flav: oh

00:12:29.32
Ricky: nice and thick and my my face and it's beautiful um on my head as well

00:12:32.90
Flav: Mm. Whatever works for you.

00:12:35.85
Ricky: Yeah, whatever what are you drinking as well?

00:12:38.09
Flav: Cotado.

00:12:39.31
Ricky: ah Excuse me?

00:12:40.77
Flav: Cortado.

00:12:42.03
Ricky: What's that?

00:12:43.06
Flav: It's like… It's like a Flat white, but less milk and more coffee. It's a… relatively we're not new it's been around for ages but relatively new to my life.

00:12:55.23
Flav: Well.

00:12:54.100
Ricky: I've never heard of it in my life.

00:12:56.77
Flav: Yeah, it's like a smaller, smaller and look because I think um there's more, some someone out there, I mean, Nick would be listening to this, he's a coffee man. and the He'll know the main difference, but I like it. I like.

00:13:07.83
Flav: I prefer the taste of coffee than I do. The taste of milk.

00:13:11.63
Ricky: Mmm.

00:13:11.100
Flav: If that makes sense. So the stronger ratio from coffee to… So milk is important to me.

00:13:18.48
Ricky: yeah I remember you used to dig me out having sweeteners or sugar in my coffee because you can't taste the coffee.

00:13:23.60
Flav: Well, not it's not it's the bitterness that's attractive to me. And ah and like… That's… Bitterness according to… Coffee. people are something about the quality of the bean shouldn't be bitter and um maybe i'm right but i do I do like kind of. Burnt taste of a…

00:13:41.04
Flav: Bean. They burnt the bean. who

00:13:42.43
Ricky: Yeah, Nick, we like the bitterness. Well, he does anyway, so…

00:13:45.67
Flav: You like what you like.

00:13:46.70
Ricky: Yeah, mind your fucking business.

00:13:48.03
Flav: And I've got one less.

00:13:51.43
Ricky: Oh my god! Holy shit!

00:13:54.94
Flav: Little vimto.

00:13:56.13
Ricky: I can as well!

00:13:57.67
Flav: I had it yesterday. I bought it yesterday. i haven't

00:14:01.02
Ricky: i've no i've never said I don't think I've ever seen a can of Vimto.

00:14:04.10
Flav: Mate, Vimto's the one.

00:14:05.45
Ricky: Oh mate, oh mate, Vimto is fucking…

00:14:05.11
Flav: What is your favorite cordial?

00:14:09.03
Ricky: Goated. It really is.

00:14:11.70
Flav: I'm So… Vimto number one for Cordial.

00:14:14.58
Ricky: but Back in the day. thick, syrupy… Vimto. Oh, my God.

00:14:19.50
Flav: Freezing cold.

00:14:19.100
Ricky: Oh, my God.

00:14:21.39
Flav: when I hang over. Yeah.

00:14:22.56
Ricky: Oh. Yeah, I'd probably say.

00:14:24.17
Flav: Yeah, Vimto, number one.

00:14:25.86
Ricky: Yeah, I'd probably say so. I haven't had it in… in years though.

00:14:29.20
Flav: Do you know what I used to love my nan's? All my nan had was lemon barley.

00:14:33.45
Ricky: Oh, yeah, that's a fan favourite, yeah.

00:14:34.36
Flav: Robinson lemon barley and she would put ice in it and it would be in a boiling hot day lemon barley freezing cold with ice Superb.

00:14:41.29
Ricky: the yeah Have you seen in, ah like… with like cordial Yeah. good I didn't even know this, but Cordial isn't known around the world. I think it's chiefly, yeah, I think it's like chiefly a British thing.

00:14:51.15
Flav: court Cordial.

00:14:54.72
Flav: Yeah, the word.

00:14:56.56
Ricky: Yeah, well, like ah getting an orange cordial.

00:14:58.25
Flav: Squash.

00:14:58.54
Ricky: like Yeah, squash.

00:14:59.80
Flav: What they don't have squash

00:15:00.38
Ricky: Like, you might… and not in Spain.

00:15:05.04
Flav: No, I suppose not. I don't remember ever having any kind of squash in Spain. what

00:15:08.52
Ricky: I had to go to loads of different shops and I asked them and they said, we you'll have to go to a British shop to buy that stuff.

00:15:15.43
Flav: What about America?

00:15:16.74
Ricky: I don't think they have it there either.

00:15:18.80
Flav: No, America does not have non-alcoholic… fruit squash or cordial that is common in the u Okay, what do you mean you don't have it? What if that's like… do Do they… Do they like…

00:15:31.79
Flav: orange juice or do they like I don't know Butter.

00:15:35.76
Ricky: ah

00:15:35.82
Flav: It's like… Of course you have it in the US.

00:15:38.73
Ricky: I know! It's strange, innit?

00:15:41.67
Flav: What? I don't… There's no squash culture.

00:15:44.57
Ricky: No!

00:15:45.52
Flav: Americans do not have daily dilutable fruit syrup concentrate. They mix in the glass with tap water. what But why not? like with The planes go back and forth all the time.

00:15:55.97
Ricky: i'd It just doesn't go on.

00:15:56.60
Flav: if If fucking Ebola can travel, then surely fruit squash can.

00:16:02.96
Ricky: Yeah, it's mad, isn't it?

00:16:04.63
Flav: yeah That has blown my mind.

00:16:31.26
Ricky: No. nay

00:16:32.60
Flav: I'd rather have… a Syrup. that you dilute with water then pour powder in and But, you know, we've got a deal on another podcast to do with a brand that is introducing powdered drinks in a big, big way.

00:19:43.96

00:20:36.93
Flav: Hey.

00:20:39.16
Flav: is Is it the end?

00:20:40.91

00:20:42.34
Ricky: Kiddo, he's dead!

00:20:43.39
Flav: Get in there!

00:20:44.68
Ricky: Run!

00:20:45.91
Flav: Get in there. ah set new I knew it. I knew it. I didn't know he listened to this.

00:20:51.64

00:20:53.48
Flav: He's a fucking legend. I love that boy.

00:20:54.64
Ricky: He is a legend. He is an absolute legend

00:20:56.89
Flav: Yeah. um Mate, Tien has been repping. For us. for… Years and years and years.

00:21:03.76
Ricky: Yeah.

00:21:04.12
Flav: 10 years. I still think of him as the kid that came on the podcast when he was young.

00:21:07.45
Ricky: Yes.

00:21:08.75
Flav: But. So every now and then I'll text him, I'll see something in there or he'll text me. And then we won't talk for about six or seven months and then exchange a couple of text messages and back to it. You're a legend, Tim.

00:21:20.50
Ricky: He's one of those people that you know… Like I don't know him. know him know him but i know him enough that that you know people that have a beautiful soul beautiful heart he's one of those pure kind of

00:21:30.66
Flav: Yeah. 100%.

00:21:34.39
Ricky: guys that are just… Absolutely beautiful person.

00:21:38.59
Flav: 100%.

00:21:39.95
Ricky: ah thank you for sending that in that was fucking superb and listen to the man Send in some dilemmas. We actually do have. one today and we've had a few more in so we will be doing A dilemma.

00:21:50.84
Ricky: Now do you know what today's topic is?

00:21:54.97
Flav: I can't remember, Ricky.

00:21:57.13
Ricky: It's… adulthood what truly makes somebody an adult age earning money leaving home becoming a parent or simply uh responsibilities

00:22:07.35
Flav: Hmm.

00:22:08.63
Ricky: When you were 16… what did you What was your vision of an adult?

00:22:15.56
Flav: Um… i mean I mean, when I was 16. I think… My… View of another… I would go back further than that.

00:22:27.53
Flav: Right.

00:22:27.84
Ricky: a Okay.

00:22:28.91
Flav: I was aware. like my nat I look at pictures of my nan when I was little. And she would have been about, well, wow was I was in my 30s. when she died.

00:22:40.31
Flav: She died during COVID, right? So it could have been the late 40s. So when I was little, and she died when she was 92 or something like that. She was 50. And then pushing 60 in these pictures. And she looked 90.

00:22:54.22
Ricky: Yeah.

00:22:54.88
Flav: And that's what I kind of, my view of adulthood. from… a child's ages that they all look so bloody old. um But now ah now you get to that age, and I think we've kind of aged differently. than the We didn't go through a world war, for example.

00:23:06.62
Ricky: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

00:23:08.16
Flav: Um… But I guess, I don't know, man, like responsibilities, like seeing my dad get up and get out go out of work, you know, he'd be out before we would. you know As we were stirring to get up to get ready, he'd he'd already been in his van driving through London.

00:23:23.77
Flav: And… I think adulthood. also looked complicated when I was 16. Like my parents had split up. And… new family new families had been formed around me.

00:23:37.02
Ricky: Hmm.

00:23:37.38
Flav: step parents and kids that are coming into the house it always ah it all felt like a bit unsettled but I think I was quite anxious to grow up and get started

00:23:47.83
Ricky: Well, you said, like, yourre your old man. Up and out the door.

00:23:52.96
Flav: Yeah.

00:23:53.78
Ricky: Adios. Who got you ready?

00:23:57.46
Flav: We got ourselves ready. What do you mean you got us ready? You're a fucking invalid.

00:24:00.21
Ricky: Well, I mean, like with kids, I know. But like my kids, ah I literally have to, I wake them up.

00:24:03.34
Flav: What?

00:24:08.08
Ricky: Wake my missus up. And then with my kids, I'm like, it's seven o 'clock. We've got to leave at 7 .45. It's five past seven. I can't hear any stirring. Like what's going on? Like I'm.

00:24:19.88
Ricky: on them, riding riding them from like 5, 10, 15, and… I remember you chatting with your chatting about Will. You've got to get up and brush your teeth. and

00:24:31.03
Flav: Yeah.

00:24:32.45
Ricky: When I was a kid… I got like my mum would wake me up. But then I would… get myself ready and get out the door and make sure i'd meet my mates at the end of the road at like quarter to eight or whatever

00:24:44.79
Flav: Yeah, we… I don't remember my dad But my mum wasn't there. But that would… sometimes wake us up. because he found it funny. So you'd say… He'd sing this song. He'd come up to the school. He goes, history and geography, maths and English.

00:25:00.41
Flav: These are my favourite subjects of the day or something like that you'd sing. and wake us up in a dick.

00:25:06.88
Ricky: <unk>s just

00:25:07.19
Flav: Um… But once we were up, it was our responsibility to get out, right? And if we got to school… And we were late. You get suspended. Oh, not suspended. You get, like, um…

00:25:19.26
Flav: You get detention and and all that stuff.

00:25:20.09
Ricky: Yeah.

00:25:21.11
Flav: so I know what you're saying, Ricky. You're saying, why can't they do it? and that and

00:25:29.87
Flav: Maybe they would if he wasn't there.

00:25:31.82
Ricky: I was about to say that. Do you think…

00:25:33.30
Flav: But they rely on you. They know that you're going to pick them up.

00:25:35.72
Ricky: Yeah, that's the thing.

00:25:38.08
Flav: and And that was…

00:25:41.57
Flav: that was this That was the thing with…

00:25:46.01
Flav: I think… Actually, probably I was stressed out about… you know, say will or… Getting ready because… Like he was always gonna get ready. He just wasn't gonna get ready an hour before he needed to.

00:25:57.09
Ricky: Yeah.

00:25:58.15
Flav: Uh… But yeah, no, I think generally… These. group of young people these days are um

00:26:08.48
Flav: They're not as good as we were.

00:26:09.78
Ricky: No. nay They're shit.

00:26:11.61
Flav: Yeah, they're shit. They're not… they're not they're not as World wisely as we were.

00:26:16.77
Ricky: No!

00:26:18.12
Flav: they're not They're not as… um the the The lack of get up and go is evident. I think. Like, I had…

00:26:25.38
Ricky: Yeah.

00:26:27.94
Flav: Sound like such old men, but we're right.

00:26:29.70
Ricky: we We are.

00:26:30.40
Flav: We are correct, and so it's fine.

00:26:30.72
Ricky: Yeah.

00:26:33.12
Flav: my i My, my, my. My… My… Fuckin'… National insurance card, which is what you need to work in this country.

00:26:42.77
Ricky: Yeah.

00:26:43.41
Flav: dropped through the letterbox It or comes out automatically. at from that even if if there is a card these days it might just be a letter written down but When it was in our days, we'd have a card and we'd carry this national insurance card around in our in our wallet.

00:26:56.89
Flav: I don't know why.

00:26:57.14
Ricky: Yeah.

00:26:58.58
Flav: Because once you'd memorized the code, you never needed the card again.

00:27:00.50
Ricky: Yeah.

00:27:00.47
Flav: But do you remember the card? It's like red and blue with the…

00:27:02.80
Ricky: Yet.

00:27:04.14
Flav: But that meant…

00:27:04.98
Ricky: Do you know your number?

00:27:06.13
Flav: Yeah.

00:27:07.02
Ricky: Okay, good.

00:27:07.29
Flav: J .S. 937161B.

00:27:10.23
Ricky: Right, very good.

00:27:11.33
Flav: Right. Like… I need i've probably had to use that once in about 15 years and I'll never forget it. because really important when we when were younger.

00:27:17.24
Ricky: Yeah.

00:27:19.58
Flav: But immediately it dropped through the door. I had a job within the end by the end of the week. I was 15 working in… Um… Doing weekends? I think…

00:27:31.30
Flav: ah No, no, I wouldn't have been at school because my birthday was 31st, so it was essentially the first… that I was the youngest in the… No, no. I was working at Woolworths while I was at secondary school. At the end.

00:27:41.74
Ricky: Jesus Christ.

00:27:43.21
Flav: Yeah, because i was but when I was doing my exams, I was pretty sure I had a job. If I remember rightly. So I was there. like And the reason why I needed a job is because… No one was giving me money. My dad didn't give me money. My mom didn't have any.

00:27:56.12
Flav: So if I needed… Stuff? trainers, stuff bought for me. Eventually I had to do it myself.

00:28:02.14
Ricky: Fucking hell, that's ah that's that's going ah early.

00:28:05.11
Flav: it Did you not? Because at 15 and a half I think it comes. Did you not? When did you get your first job?

00:28:09.44
Ricky: yeah it was 15 when you're saying this i haven't thought about this In fucking years. Probably since it happened. There was a jeans shop.

00:28:20.23
Ricky: up the city center at Milton Keynes and I was 15 and I went in there and I said oh like here's my CV can I work here blah blah blah And they were like, yeah, we're really short staffed today. You can start today.

00:28:31.30
Ricky: So I started. that day folding jeans up getting stuff out of stock cupboard and just being a dog's body and then the manager at the end of and end of the day came up to me and said oh have you got your national insurance card and all that i was like no i haven't it

00:28:37.65
Flav: Yeah.

00:28:44.10
Ricky: because i'm like 15 it doesn't come until and they're like Well… You can't work here then.

00:28:49.50
Flav: Yay.

00:28:49.85
Ricky: And I was like, right. Okay, and he said, well… come back when when you've got your national insurance card. So I just worked at a shop for free for the day, folding jeans.

00:28:59.13
Flav: What, I didn't give you like…

00:29:00.27
Ricky: No, no.

00:29:01.44
Flav: ah

00:29:01.33
Ricky: I was just literally not contracted, no nothing. Just a man or boy in a shop folding jeans for free for the day. so

00:29:10.04
Flav: Shouldn't they would give you like 20k cash or something?

00:29:12.15
Ricky: How are they gaming? Fuck who? God, I haven't thought about that in years. How embarrassing.

00:29:19.06
Flav: ah Yeah. That was wicked.

00:29:22.03
Ricky: Yeah. Oh, dearie me. but when I was ah but like, I think going back… Mine is quite simplistic of an adult. Married.

00:29:34.21
Ricky: Kids. House. Like, that's an adult. I remember being 16. Actually no, I was younger than that, maybe 14. And, you know, when you're at school and the ah the bigger kids.

00:29:46.77
Ricky: Turn up to the school. in their Nova SRI

00:29:50.40
Flav: yeah

00:29:50.54
Ricky: Kitted out.

00:29:51.33
Flav: Close.

00:29:51.91
Ricky: Picking up the girls. That are in your year. And… It's a bit weird thinking about it now because they were like… early 20s and these are school girls do you know what i mean hang around with them

00:30:01.62
Flav: Yeah. yeah yeah that it was weird there was a lot of that going around back then back then like now you're a nonce if you do that but

00:30:08.60
Ricky: Yeah.

00:30:09.29
Flav: But… But then… I remember kids. I know someone personally who used to do it, who used to go… pull up outside school. in the In a… um gold.

00:30:23.07
Flav: ah Escort.

00:30:24.34
Ricky: Oh shit, go on with this world.

00:30:25.58
Flav: Thanks. is it xlr right i think

00:30:28.64
Ricky: Uh…

00:30:28.50
Flav: Excel. Excel.

00:30:29.44
Ricky: Yeah.

00:30:30.29
Flav: XLR or something like that. Ford Escort XLR, something like that. Um, Yeah, and just talk to the school kids. And they're like…

00:30:37.75
Ricky: Yeah!

00:30:38.44
Flav: They were like 20. You know, these are 15. These are… Barely pubescent. Like… what I think that's a positive thing about this modern era.

00:30:46.79
Ricky: Yeah.

00:30:47.35
Flav: Is that the… People that talk to young girls… vilified in a big big way

00:30:51.85
Ricky: Good.

00:30:52.48
Flav: You're 20 years old, you shouldn't be talking to a 16 year old.

00:30:54.63
Ricky: No, no, no.

00:30:55.19
Flav: Not none.

00:30:55.28
Ricky: yeah And even younger as well. Like my age, it was like 14, 15. But. when when I was younger, but when when I saw these people. I was like they're old.

00:31:06.30
Ricky: Like there'd be sometimes someone would slag one of them off or whatever. And they'd come into the school, or be on the school field. Wanting to have it with one of someone my age and you think, fucking hell, he's 22.

00:31:15.37
Flav: Yeah.

00:31:17.70
Ricky: He's out.

00:31:18.37
Flav: Yeah. Yeah.

00:31:19.11
Ricky: he's like he's a proper man that guy sir

00:31:21.51
Flav: Yep.

00:31:21.47
Ricky: He's got a car and everything. So I think that was my my, so when I was younger, that was quite old for me. but the standard of And what an adult was. was mainly a man with a beard.

00:31:34.20
Ricky: And he had a house. and was married and a car. Say… That was my kind of typical of. what an adult looks like.

00:31:46.71
Ricky: What?

00:31:46.58
Flav: I also thought you'd be an adult when you're… in your 20s i never felt like an adult in my 20s i felt like a young person And i didn't I wasn't with it. I wasn't. Capable.

00:31:59.10
Flav: i was um I was immature, I think. I mean, I think all 20-year-olds. We talked to most… kids in their 20s, early 20s.

00:32:07.03
Ricky: Yeah.

00:32:06.85
Flav: they sound like kids and they say stuff that

00:32:08.85
Ricky: Yeah.

00:32:10.56
Flav: you know, it sounds like they're ignorant or immature or or Like… I could never date. Someone. Or don't find it. girls in their early 20s.

00:32:22.78
Flav: attractive in any way.

00:32:24.22
Ricky: No.

00:32:25.67
Flav: if they may look looking like youth is beautiful right it's like um

00:32:28.46
Ricky: Mmm.

00:32:30.12
Flav: Your skin is… Radiant. There's no wrinkles.

00:32:32.52
Ricky: Yeah.

00:32:34.40
Flav: you know E. Your… you You would never look as healthy as you do when you're in your early 20s, probably.

00:32:44.11
Ricky: No.

00:32:45.13
Flav: But the minute they opened their mouths…

00:32:49.30
Flav: Typically, you're like… Jesus. how how can You can't have a relationship. that's It's impossible.

00:32:54.43
Ricky: Yeah.

00:32:55.44
Flav: um And so it's really unattractive. so um And then I think back when I was in my 20s, and I look a picture of when I was in my 20s. And I was like, you just look like a… Boy, a baby.

00:33:06.29
Ricky: Yeah.

00:33:06.51
Flav: when i It doesn't even look like me, I don't think. Um, And… You know yeah the choice to go back. If I had the choice to go back to that.

00:33:17.31
Flav: and lose everything that I've had. But just to have another go, I don't think I would.

00:33:22.34
Ricky: No. nay

00:33:24.52
Flav: Prefer my brain now.

00:33:26.29
Ricky: Yes.

00:33:27.08
Flav: Whereas in the 20s, I didn't know where my arse and my elbow.

00:33:29.85
Ricky: I'm…

00:33:29.37
Flav: I was having pan anxiety attacks, panic attacks all the time. i was

00:33:32.56
Ricky: Yeah.

00:33:33.61
Flav: I didn't know where my future was. I felt like life was slipping away, got kind of fixated on mortality. on Like anyone, if you've made if you've gone through your 20s and you're in a good place, you've done really well, I think.

00:33:45.65
Ricky: Yeah.

00:33:46.42
Flav: It's not until you get into your 30s where I started to… started to feel like a grown-up. Things shifted. i started to I started to feel like what I thought a grown-up. Peace. and was.

00:33:57.61
Flav: And a lot of that is… You stop caring what other people think about you as much. Not saying… If someone's rude to you I don't care. you You could be infected by that. But you your the way you behave isn't dominated by what you think other people want to see.

00:34:13.17
Flav: That for me is when I started becoming an an adult. That's what an adult is. And the the realization that. most of the time. No one gives a shit about you. Like… You don't have to worry about what people are thinking of you.

00:34:27.95
Flav: because they're not thinking of you.

00:34:29.85
Ricky: Hmm.

00:34:31.33
Flav: like Trying to articulate that to a teenage girl, for example, like my daughter.

00:34:31.48
Ricky: Yeah.

00:34:35.63
Ricky: Yes.

00:34:36.81
Flav: that in it and that And I felt the same when I was her age.

00:34:40.10
Ricky: Yeah.

00:34:40.44
Flav: I felt everybody was thinking about me all the time, not in an egotistical way. look judging. And. Peace. talking and being mean. and that sort of stuff.

00:34:51.30
Flav: What is… They'll think something. And forget about it. And they've moved on to the next thing. Everyone's lives are really busy.

00:34:58.18
Ricky: Yeah.

00:34:58.76
Flav: Who do you think you are that you think that they're thinking about you all the time?

00:35:01.57
Ricky: Yeah, I I was exactly the same.

00:35:01.89
Flav: Right. Mm.

00:35:04.32
Ricky: ah You know, I've… spoken about it many times on here before But ah being like the only brown boy in. my friendship group. of you know mostly white well i say mostly everyone was white growing up but it was that kind of

00:35:19.97
Flav: Hmm.

00:35:24.10
Ricky: always thinking that they're thinking that.

00:35:27.43
Flav: Yeah.

00:35:27.54
Ricky: And more than likely no one was thinking it. But it… Uh… you know kind of a certainly plays on your mind and my my daughter is the same not in the thinking of that but very self-conscious won't kind of go to in a shop and ask if they've got these jeans and the size whatever uh would stay by my side and very kind of um you know, ah introverted. look Do you remember like… um

00:35:56.87
Ricky: a part in your life where you're like ah That is… I'm an adult now.

00:36:03.78
Ricky: That's my… but when When I was… So the first one, kind of like a bit of a… it it It wasn't that first bit of. Oh man, I am an adult.

00:36:15.91
Ricky: But I remember as a kid, and my I used to go fishing all the time. And I'd spend the vast majority of my six week summer holidays fishing. on a bank night fishing all that lot my mum was really worried about me and i convinced her to get me uh a mobile phone an orange.

00:36:34.27
Ricky: Maybe I'll phone.

00:36:35.30
Flav: a

00:36:36.19
Ricky: ah She got the contract out in her name, but she was like. In order for you to have this. It's in my name, but you have to make the payments. And it is like for a year or two years. And it is this amount of money. You have to get a paper around. You have to do this, that and the other.

00:36:53.63
Ricky: And I was like, this is big boy shit. that i've got like a it's not in my name but i have a contract on a mobile phone And I have to pay this. And I'll see you. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it.

00:37:06.92
Flav: what So you you sort of in you invited on the responsibility of…

00:37:10.49
Ricky: Yeah, yeah, yeah

00:37:12.29
Flav: Oh.

00:37:12.13
Ricky: But I'm good.

00:37:13.14
Flav: And did you do it?

00:37:14.33
Ricky: ah you I mean, to two about four months, yeah.

00:37:17.25
Flav: And then what?

00:37:17.54
Ricky: Then my mum had to take over.

00:37:18.98
Flav: wow

00:37:19.43
Ricky: ah

00:37:20.36
Flav: What? did you Did you have a job to pay for it?

00:37:23.92
Ricky: i I had a paper round. that I was doing. ri and i And I did that paper round, but it didn't amount to.

00:37:28.44
Flav: Yeah.

00:37:29.71
Ricky: So there was the paper round and then there was other bits and pieces and where I was going to make money. and I fell down at that part.

00:37:37.68
Flav: Yeah.

00:37:38.14
Ricky: You can't go on stealing. ladders from building sites.

00:37:43.43
Flav: I…

00:37:43.46
Ricky: to make extra money.

00:37:44.89
Flav: I… Is that what you did?

00:37:46.63
Ricky: Yeah.

00:37:47.26
Flav: Stealing ladders.

00:37:48.46
Ricky: yeah so the really expensive like two-story ladders are you know you can get them quite easily but the three-story wooden ladders

00:37:57.33
Flav: What would you do with them?

00:37:58.88
Ricky: So what we do I would It would either be me or my mate. And they would be tied. At the top. to scaffolding to hold them in place and when it got night One of us, whoever it was, it was their turn.

00:38:13.85
Ricky: They will climb up. cut the ropes and then push the ladder. And as the lad is falling backwards, the other person on the floor. Would hold it. level it and keep walking backwards till it's on the floor then both of you would take either end walk to a secluded bit, the end of a road or whatever, chuck it in the bushes.

00:38:33.29
Ricky: And then set it to. a builder, a building merchant, whatever, and say… We've got a ladder. It's down here. Give us 30 quid. They'll drive by in the morning, put it on the back of their truck. Away you go.

00:38:44.83
Flav: You've never told me that.

00:38:46.54
Ricky: I swear I've even told it on air.

00:38:48.78
Flav: No you haven't.

00:38:49.62
Ricky: Have I not?

00:38:50.24
Flav: Nah.

00:38:51.03
Ricky: Right, okay.

00:38:51.54
Flav: i've never That's the first time I've ever heard that leave your mouth.

00:38:51.58
Ricky: one the the first The first time that it happened, obviously I didn't know what I was doing and I was holding the ladder. And my mate pushed the ladder off the scaffolding and it was way, way more heavier than I anticipated.

00:39:06.35
Ricky: I just landed on my head and just crunched my head. I just fucked it well up, man.

00:39:11.47
Flav: Heh.

00:39:12.28
Ricky: ah

00:39:12.78
Flav: um I… Do you know when you realise that there's… coneys The lack of financial literacy I had. Leaving school. It was alarming.

00:39:24.30
Flav: Right. Oi. ran up. When I was my first year at university, he ran up so much debt, it was unreal.

00:39:33.20
Ricky: Right. What are we talking? Just the normal standard that everyone…

00:39:37.38
Flav: So…

00:39:37.49
Ricky: you know.

00:39:38.21
Flav: Yeah, you like, so so no, what I mean, it just, it's it was… you You get there at freshers and there were stalls. The.

00:39:45.13
Ricky: Yeah.

00:39:45.47
Flav: For NatWest, there were stools for… Sun sun there. And they go, oh, you can have, we'll give you an overdraft. of a thousand pounds.

00:39:52.71
Ricky: ah

00:39:54.28
Flav: All right. And you're right. Wow.

00:39:56.05
Ricky: Yeah.

00:39:55.86
Flav: A thousand pounds, free money.

00:39:57.67
Ricky: Yeah.

00:39:58.63
Flav: I'm like, that sounds great. I don't know what an overdraft is.

00:40:00.26
Ricky: yeah

00:40:01.58
Flav: When will I pay it back? You don't have to really pay it back. You just pay money into it, huh?

00:40:04.28
Ricky: Yeah.

00:40:06.53
Flav: And we'll give you a credit card with a limit of 500 quid. But I've got a fifth.

00:40:09.65
Ricky: chabo

00:40:10.68
Flav: I've got 1500 quid of free money.

00:40:13.03
Ricky: Cash on the It Boy!

00:40:14.77
Flav: Yeah, and it's spent and it went quick and I thought it was gonna last forever And then obviously… You've got a… Pay… There's repayments. There's interest and stuff on this stuff.

00:40:26.75
Flav: And you don't have any money to spend it all.

00:40:26.69
Ricky: Yeah. Yeah.

00:40:28.80
Flav: You spent your student loan. Ah. Phone. I need a phone. Everyone's got a phone.

00:40:34.40
Ricky: Yeah.

00:40:34.99
Flav: I get 53 minutes a day. You can make as many phone calls up to 53 minutes a day.

00:40:40.51
Ricky: 53.

00:40:40.16
Flav: i had a good 50 minutes a day free.

00:40:42.70
Ricky: Oh, sorry

00:40:43.47
Flav: That's how it was. So after 50 minutes, they start charging calls. I've got a girlfriend in London who's neurotic.

00:40:50.77
Ricky: Okay.

00:40:51.29
Flav: All right? Just an absolute fucking nightmare, to be honest. And. She doesn't want to stop talking after 50 minutes, does she?

00:40:58.60
Ricky: Uh…

00:40:58.44
Flav: Don't worry about it. I'll pay it. That's fine. Gets the end of the month. 300 quid phone bill. Fuck, can't pay.

00:41:04.04
Ricky: Oh my god, that's…

00:41:05.26
Flav: Like that. I know what I'll do. I've got this checkbook. I'll write the check. I'll use the check. i send the check off the checks bounce obviously there's no money in my account

00:41:15.41
Ricky: Yeah.

00:41:15.91
Flav: The bank charges me every time they have to bounce a check, 30 quid.

00:41:19.18
Ricky: Oh, my God.

00:41:20.27
Flav: Some.

00:41:20.02
Ricky: I didn't know that.

00:41:21.30
Flav: Yeah, okay. Well, of course, yeah. You you can't… it's not can't continually… but you can't it's fraud essentially you're trying to pay for

00:41:27.55
Ricky: Well, I… I've never paid a check where it hasn't bounced.

00:41:31.46
Flav: When it has bounced, you mean?

00:41:33.24
Ricky: Oh, so yeah, yeah.

00:41:34.57
Flav: Uh… I did a whole checkbook.

00:41:37.95
Ricky: ah

00:41:40.11
Flav: Um… I was a thousand pounds over my limit.

00:41:43.83
Ricky: Oh man.

00:41:45.15
Flav: I was fucked, Ricky. adulthood was realising At that moment. There is no escaping this.

00:41:53.37
Ricky: Yeah.

00:41:54.20
Flav: you gotta pay you gotta find a way and pay and and i think my grandfather I was given a thousand pounds and my grandfather died. and I used that to pay off what I owed the bank.

00:42:05.27
Ricky: Right.

00:42:05.40
Flav: for for the bounce checks alone.

00:42:07.34
Ricky: I want y 'all.

00:42:07.93
Flav: phone Phone got disconnected. Like that. all that shit no one taught me about money no one taught me about it

00:42:15.10
Ricky: ah See, that's a… With my ah my youngest at the moment. I'm trying to do this teaching thing where. Obviously money. And. Yesterday. Literally yesterday, I said.

00:42:28.01
Ricky: you've got six pound in your account You got £3 for the bus on Thursday. You've got £3 on the bus for a Friday. That's £6. You cannot spend any anymore.

00:42:40.21
Ricky: This is your travel money. Do you understand? Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, whatever. comes back home yesterday and she like when she walks through the door it's like Where have you got those crisps from? Why have you got that drink? Yeah, I just went to the shop To-to- With what?

00:42:55.86
Ricky: I'd just bought it. There was money in my account. I was like… literally we had this conversation this morning you only have six pound three pound for thursday three pound for friday you can't spend anywhere oh oh yeah sorry i've spent it Right, okay, good.

00:43:10.95
Flav: I mean, what should happen is you're okay.

00:43:11.30
Ricky: Good.

00:43:12.14
Flav: You were going to be walking to school, weren't you? How long does it take us to walk?

00:43:15.64
Ricky: Oh, mate, it'd be fucking an hour at least.

00:43:18.30
Flav: Right, so… She wouldn't do it again if she has to walk an hour, would she?

00:43:20.52
Ricky: No.

00:43:22.80
Flav: but And this is another thing. i My dad used to give me a quid a day for lunch. But we walked to school. It was a 45-minute walk, 45 minutes back.

00:43:32.32
Ricky: Yeah.

00:43:32.84
Flav: it wasn't even a moment's pause we're like this is just what it is

00:43:35.98
Ricky: Yeah, yeah.

00:43:37.17
Flav: I've convinced Will to get a bus that took 17 minutes. It's going to save me about… half an hour drive. And it was like… I can't believe you're asking me to do this. it kind of a He didn't…

00:43:49.60
Flav: They were just like… why have Why do I have to ask you to do this? You should know the bus.

00:43:52.98
Ricky: Yeah.

00:43:54.24
Flav: Get on it. Fucking get home, but it's slightly different in London And I guess in Milton Keynes, you can just maneuver much more easier than the heli.

00:44:02.79
Ricky: there's this There's a stigma in Milton Keynes that if you're boss if you're on the bus… you know you Yeah.

00:44:10.84
Flav: Parvo.

00:44:10.98
Ricky: you Cool. Yeah, po ah yeah, yeah, for sure.

00:44:13.56
Flav: I was on the bus all the time. Five times a day, probably.

00:44:16.29
Ricky: Yeah, that's London though. Everyone gets the bus, even fucking… stockbrokers and all that lot they get by well i mean maybe not them but

00:44:23.83
Flav: Yeah, they bought the property.

00:44:25.05
Ricky: Yeah, if everyone gets buses, everyone gets tube. There was no stigma. When I came to London and I was getting the bus, I was a bit like, oh, fucking hell, I can't get the bus.

00:44:32.84
Flav: ah

00:44:33.06
Ricky: But then ah after like after a few weeks, you're just like… I quite like the bus. I get to sit and read. This isn't this is all right. get to you know have time to myself it was nice but So I think money…

00:44:46.11
Ricky: is one of those things where… You have to learn. to You know. Paying your bills. paying your travel paying whatever is one of those things.

00:45:00.48
Ricky: that comes into your life is when you. when you cross that threshold of understanding money And I'm not talking about… Mortgage.

00:45:10.42
Flav: well ah I was about to say that Ricky actually

00:45:10.54
Ricky: or but Right.

00:45:13.16
Flav: When…

00:45:13.29
Ricky: ah Okay.

00:45:14.36
Flav: When I…

00:45:14.79
Ricky: Done.

00:45:15.86
Flav: There's new levels to being an an adult as the older you get as well. It's like you level up. And I'm like… Realising that if you stop working… This all falls apart.

00:45:27.73
Flav: But if if I…

00:45:27.79
Ricky: Oh.

00:45:28.89
Flav: Like… I pay the mortgage.

00:45:30.66
Ricky: Hmm.

00:45:32.37
Flav: It's my responsibility.

00:45:33.52
Ricky: Yeah.

00:45:34.30
Flav: It's not my wife's responsibility It's mine.

00:45:36.98
Ricky: Oh. Okay.

00:45:38.97
Flav: and the bills. If money runs out… They asked me.

00:45:44.88
Ricky: Yeah.

00:45:45.86
Flav: if the If my missus… gets to the end of the month and there's bills to come out and she doesn't have enough money in her account to cover it. It's our account now. It's both our names on it, to be fair.

00:45:54.37
Ricky: Yeah.

00:45:55.68
Flav: i i I have to find the money.

00:45:59.47
Ricky: Right.

00:46:00.44
Flav: I have to. uh And that was a new level. Because it's like, if if I don't, this all falls apart.

00:46:08.05
Ricky: Yeah, yeah, it's…

00:46:09.02
Flav: And we…

00:46:09.01
Ricky: ah

00:46:09.32
Flav: We've got nowhere way to live.

00:46:11.20
Ricky: that That is a part of… ah Being an add adult. I it's weird, isn't it? Like, because. I don't want to sound… um I feel like like me being a man.

00:46:24.87
Ricky: and me providing for my family. and paying for when the washing machine breaks i'm i'll cover it when the you know holidays uh shot with anything right i i feel like that's me like i i put it on myself to do it however you want to live you live that way but that's how i do it

00:46:37.19
Flav: Mm.

00:46:43.09
Flav: Yeah.

00:46:44.28
Ricky: And having that pressure. is a new level in comparison to me. living in London and sharing a room.

00:46:54.87
Ricky: And just paying for. all bills in for £800. And then the rest is mine. to piss up the wall. that and that I think that is a level of adulthood that is…

00:47:07.83
Flav: Yeah.

00:47:07.73
Ricky: It's scary. And I don't like it. what One thing I did want to talk about.

00:47:12.88
Flav: But we we're on a rock flying through space Rick

00:47:15.29
Ricky: Yeah, exactly

00:47:15.55
Flav: Bye. Who cares?

00:47:16.92
Ricky: Yeah, we don't know when we're going to die, so might as well just…

00:47:19.94
Flav: Just crack on.

00:47:20.71
Ricky: Just crack on.

00:47:21.63
Flav: Yeah. Whoa, shit.

00:47:23.68
Ricky: A lot of people said about… um age. And is it simply age that makes you an adult now? to Some of my fucking Google… searches.

00:47:33.86
Ricky: for doing this pod is insane but

00:47:37.09
Flav: I mean, I've known 60 year olds who are…

00:47:37.04
Ricky: Uh, Okay.

00:47:39.94
Flav: You're right. Uh, you know, ah more immature than… The kids. I don't think age is ah is a… Factor, really.

00:47:47.57
Ricky: Right, okay.

00:47:48.34
Flav: I'm thinking of one in particular.

00:47:48.52
Ricky: Oh.

00:47:49.44
Flav: I'm like, how the fuck are you even alive, let alone… You know. flourishing. Been on the dole for 60 years.

00:47:57.76
Ricky: Jesus Christ.

00:47:59.63
Flav: Not 60 though.

00:47:59.85
Ricky: How? I mean, that's a long time. Uh, The ah Crown Prosecution In England and Wales, a child… means Anyone under 18.

00:48:12.31
Flav: Yeah.

00:48:12.31
Ricky: However, the age of consent… for sexual activity is 16.

00:48:16.95
Flav: Yep.

00:48:19.28
Ricky: If 18 makes you an adult, why can you have sex at 16?

00:48:25.41
Ricky: Why can you…

00:48:25.88
Flav: ah But it's just… a measurement though in this instance isn't it it's not it's just There has to be some gra gra grammar to this. You have to understand. that in the eyes of law it's 18, right?

00:48:38.63
Ricky: Mm.

00:48:39.18
Flav: It's just an understanding. It doesn't… You aren't an adult. You're no different when you're 17. and 350 how many days 364 days

00:48:47.77
Ricky: Hmm.

00:48:48.60
Flav: and then And then suddenly you're… 18. And it's just the way the world. The UK government classifies you. You're not an adult. It's just… Grammar

00:48:58.50
Ricky: Right.

00:49:00.16
Flav: You're no different.

00:49:00.14
Ricky: So it's not… But… Away from that.

00:49:03.24
Flav: Like 16 is a logic.

00:49:03.34
Ricky: 16.

00:49:04.87
Flav: For sex, 16 is a logical… Because kids are having sex before 16.

00:49:09.63
Ricky: Yes.

00:49:10.57
Flav: So it's just… a pragmatic Age, I think it's fine. 16? Would you…

00:49:14.73
Ricky: but like at 16 you can you can have sex become pregnant and have an abortion you can do all those things But you're still classified as a child.

00:49:27.12
Flav: Um,

00:49:27.80
Ricky: that's cut That's quite an adult.

00:49:33.25
Flav: Yeah. But it's not.

00:49:37.44
Flav: It's like 18 is the age that the government have to legally stop schooling you.

00:49:42.60
Ricky: Hmm.

00:49:43.15
Flav: It's just a definition.

00:49:44.51
Ricky: Yeah.

00:49:45.03
Flav: You're not an adult. kids ah can have ah have sex have a baby have an abortion before 16 they're not getting arrested

00:49:52.49
Ricky: Yes.

00:49:53.28
Flav: What difference does it make where the… Age is. Is 16s important if you're… 20 and you're having six with because that you can charge that person with statutory rape

00:50:01.27
Ricky: That was disgusting.

00:50:02.52
Flav: Yeah. It's a… It doesn't matter, really. like 18 they just have to have a definition of when someone is classed legally as an adult for things like Ignition.

00:50:16.29
Flav: work at tax reasons or for working or what or… If you want to claim benefits. The end of child benefits. Stop. It's just a definition.

00:50:28.42
Flav: Night.

00:50:28.35
Ricky: I…

00:50:29.59
Flav: It's just a young boy. the having sex thing is irrelevant to the 18 or 16 thing i think

00:50:35.21
Ricky: the Being 17 and being able to drive. is bad for me as well. If you you're a child, you're 17 and you can get in.

00:50:42.20
Flav: Yeah.

00:50:44.14
Ricky: That. machine that can do that much damage.

00:50:48.43
Flav: Yeah.

00:50:48.40
Ricky: That's fine.

00:50:49.42
Flav: Mate.

00:50:49.03
Ricky: But you can't drink a beer.

00:50:50.90
Flav: To date. Yeah. Today… ah Will was doing his CBT.

00:50:57.41
Ricky: Easy!

00:50:58.28
Flav: Yeah. All the boys have done it. It's like… A rite of passage here.

00:51:02.42
Ricky: Come on.

00:51:03.51
Flav: Because you can drive a moped, that's it. for one day's training then you can drive up to a 50cc moped It scares the life out of me. But.

00:51:11.25
Ricky: Oh, man.

00:51:12.08
Flav: I can't. But what can you do? They're going to do it anyway. like They're going out and they're…

00:51:15.04
Ricky: Yeah.

00:51:16.58
Flav: like It is scary. Right. he At some point, he's coming off that thing.

00:51:22.97
Ricky: Mmm.

00:51:24.38
Flav: And he said to me actually yesterday, he goes, if can you lend me the money and I'll pay you back. What I'll do is I'll get a delivery job. or something like that, with the moped to pay you back. And I was like, no, you can… you can get a job. I'll lend you the money if you get a job.

00:51:35.93
Ricky: Right, okay.

00:51:37.49
Flav: Yeah.

00:51:38.24
Ricky: Right.

00:51:38.36
Flav: But it… Yeah, so I'm not… what what would happen is that there wouldn't be any delivery job. And I would never…

00:51:44.42
Ricky: Yeah.

00:51:44.65
Flav: and i don't I don't mind… if i could afford it which i can't at the moment because it's a terrible tax bill coming But. If I can afford it. Obviously I would lend them the money for everything, but this is specific.

00:51:57.79
Flav: there's insurance you've got about a grand a year insurance for a moped

00:52:01.52
Ricky: fucking

00:52:02.64
Flav: ah So… He's got to get a job. He's the only way around it.

00:52:05.17
Ricky: How much are mopeds nowadays?

00:52:09.77
Flav: I don't know, he's finding them, him and his mate are obsessed with Facebook marketplace. They end up buying this, they get there and they're broken and there's things not right with it.

00:52:19.03
Ricky: ah

00:52:19.41
Flav: I don't know, man. How much do you owe?

00:52:20.99
Ricky: Um. Before we finish on this, I… did work like the The main reason I put this in is because there was… ah So that was disgusting, you pig.

00:52:32.26
Flav: Sorry.

00:52:32.60
Ricky: ah There's this ah discussion. on whether… 16 and 17 year olds should be able to vote. And there's research going on at the moment.

00:52:44.18
Flav: No.

00:52:46.48
Ricky: No.

00:52:47.38
Flav: it's too big they don't understand

00:52:48.72
Ricky: Too big.

00:52:49.56
Flav: But most of them don't understand. Most adults don't understand what they're fucking voting for.

00:52:53.22
Ricky: No.

00:52:52.96
Flav: Look at Brexit. brexit

00:52:54.47
Ricky: Yeah.

00:52:55.32
Flav: That was nothing to do with 16 year olds. That was to do with. Giving people. an opinion on something they don't understand. All of the people that voted vote. voted to leave, the well, not all of them, I'd say 95 % of…

00:53:08.35
Flav: of the people that voted to leave. Europe. It was about immigration.

00:53:13.08
Ricky: Yes.

00:53:13.80
Flav: When…

00:53:13.82
Ricky: Oh, 100%.

00:53:14.83
Flav: It was nothing ah nothing to do with immigration. Like it hasn't changed anything. I didn't vote because I didn't know what the fuck I was supposed to be voting for. What what what was it? like what What was it that we were supposed to understand in ah in a way that…

00:53:31.78
Flav: Like that's why you vote politicians in. because they do they're supposed to understand the ramifications of things

00:53:35.09
Ricky: Yeah.

00:53:39.07
Flav: It was a cop-out. From fucking and Dave. from Cameron to just go let the people decide.

00:53:44.37
Ricky: Yeah.

00:53:44.61
Flav: The people have decided and… I think it depends. The most staunchest. brexiteers probably would say things otherwise but generally i think it's been considered as a Big mistake, believe him. the European Union.

00:53:54.61
Ricky: Did I tell you about my ah the discussion with my dad about Brexit? And we were like, it was the hot topic and we were at the football ra and we're at the CAF and stuff. and I think the votes had been cast at this point.

00:54:07.31
Ricky: And. or were we were leading up to it. And I said to him, what What are you voting for? And he's like… Leave, obviously. And I was like… Why? i that I'm like…

00:54:19.27
Ricky: but Why? I'm just interested. And he was like, I can't walk down Harrow. uh high street without seeing Foreign Signs uh you know for you know just foreigners everywhere it's like it's it's crazy and i was like oh so that's why you're voting brexit because the front is and he's like yeah i am I took a deep breath and I was like.

00:54:39.90
Ricky: Remind me… How old were you when you moved to England? from another country and got a boat over here. And just his mind, the slow clockgs cogs turning, and he was like…

00:54:54.51
Ricky: Oh. you've got you've you've got a pointer

00:54:57.05
Flav: there is There is a lot of… um people like your dad who have been here for a long, long time. who have a problem.

00:55:01.72
Ricky: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:55:03.02
Flav: With. immigration only only know that through conversation

00:55:04.48
Ricky: Yeah, yeah

00:55:08.16
Flav: I think that… they Like your dad assimilated, didn't he? He came in.

00:55:12.19
Ricky: Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah.

00:55:13.66
Flav: um I'd imagine he already spoke English before he came here because lots of…

00:55:16.29
Ricky: Yes.

00:55:16.98
Flav: But lots of people. Did he come from a city?

00:55:19.33
Ricky: ah Yes, he did, yeah. But where my both both sets of my parents come from, they lived in British colonies.

00:55:26.12
Flav: Right, so

00:55:26.25
Ricky: so and So they don't know. hindi or like native language all they know is british

00:55:31.42
Flav: Yeah, so it would have been easier for them to do it.

00:55:32.85
Ricky: English, yeah.

00:55:33.74
Flav: Yeah, no, yes it's just like so so if you if it was all, like Brexit was so much more complicated, it was about… Trade is about freedom of movement. It was about you know, ah sovereignty.

00:55:45.27
Flav: and being able to make our own decisions for our own selves and and not be influenced by the

00:55:49.97
Ricky: Yep.

00:55:52.30
Flav: by Brussels. It was just mad, I just thought. Adelaide. I find it strange. When people… Why are people were so politically active now?

00:56:04.79
Ricky: Hmm.

00:56:05.78
Flav: like certainly in things like brexit and stuff like i don't I don't want to ever have a political conversation ever again in my life.

00:56:12.88
Ricky: yeah i've Yeah, I can understand. I can't understand.

00:56:16.14
Flav: But Oli wants to have these conversations with my dad.

00:56:16.07
Ricky: But…

00:56:19.47
Flav: Oli's more left-wing, like she doesn't like… Cheers, mate. you know free palestine And she's like… Uh… you know she but she's She thinks we should be in the European Union.

00:56:30.46
Flav: She's much more left-leaning. than most people around here like labor haven't got a seat in in where we live in dev devices or

00:56:32.16
Ricky: Yeah.

00:56:37.92
Flav: it Probably in anywhere in Wiltshire. It's Profitory Greenbelt.

00:56:41.43
Ricky: Yeah, yeah, you love it there.

00:56:42.70
Flav: But… Yeah, I love it. Yeah. Uh. And. um I uh… but But when you speak to my wife, you think you're like…

00:56:54.37
Flav: you You're you're labor. You're like a labor vote. It feels like that But if ah she can't vote because she's Swiss, so it doesn't matter really what she what she would have done.

00:56:58.33
Ricky: Yeah.

00:57:02.57
Flav: but Yeah, she wants to have those political conversations around just finding the energy. they don't They always end in tears. Always ending people getting angry. Frustrated.

00:57:11.89
Ricky: I can't believe she can't vote.

00:57:14.40
Flav: She wasn't born here.

00:57:15.73
Ricky: So?

00:57:16.32
Flav: She's a Swiss national. She doesn't have British…

00:57:17.87
Ricky: how Yeah, but she's lived here for how long?

00:57:20.65
Flav: Uh… five since she was five.

00:57:23.07
Ricky: But a fucking owl.

00:57:24.54
Flav: You have to be a British citizen. to To vote.

00:57:29.80
Ricky: I mean, yeah, okay.

00:57:30.74
Flav: she's not Her sister tried to become one, but they were denied.

00:57:34.41
Ricky: Thus. I have no idea what that is.

00:57:35.91
Flav: Yeah. So she's got indefinite leave to remain.

00:57:39.00
Ricky: Right, okay.

00:57:40.18
Flav: Bye. There was talk about them reviewing those cases, like if if reform got in, they're going to review all of those cases. So…

00:57:46.40
Ricky: What happens if she was like she has to go back to

00:57:48.14
Flav: I will backflip to Switzerland. Have you ever been?

00:57:51.43
Ricky: I've not been. It's fucking way too expensive.

00:57:53.69
Flav: I know. i

00:57:54.40
Ricky: Beautiful, but…

00:57:55.87
Flav: Yeah, I would go. I'd go immediately. I've got to go in Switzerland. Alright. Fine, let's do it.

00:58:03.01
Ricky: Quality. With that, though, right, 16, 17-year-olds. Brexit. Pure, ah good good good example there. Would it not?

00:58:14.15
Ricky: Encourage. the younger generation to actually give a shit.

00:58:17.41
Flav: I think they do give a shit. um But… i was like what i remember of me When I was… in there in my teens is I was Idealistic. and didn't have an I didn't have a fair sense of the world

00:58:29.26
Ricky: Yeah.

00:58:30.23
Flav: Um… and you would get idealistic politics. And if you… which aren't based in reality, in my opinion. Um, the Green Party would be running the country.

00:58:44.16
Ricky: Yeah.

00:58:44.67
Flav: if if Most young players, yeah young people would vote Green, probably.

00:58:47.93
Ricky: Yeah.

00:58:48.18
Flav: Certainly. Because they look at labor and they look at… to conservatives and there's nothing there for them. So they'll vote. green or something like that. So you just have hung parliaments, you'd have…

00:59:00.41
Flav: you'd have… Uh, the rise of Left. which is… could be argued to be a good thing. i i My politics now as I get older are much more centrist.

00:59:12.51
Flav: I think there's good things from both parties if you listen to them. Um, There's somewhere in between is probably the right way to move forward But when I was a kid I was like, fuck Tories.

00:59:23.30
Flav: Fuck everything.

00:59:23.47
Ricky: Yeah. Yeah, fuck the toys.

00:59:26.04
Flav: Right. but it's so easy they're racist, they're and growing up is realizing they're not.

00:59:27.78
Ricky: Yeah.

00:59:29.79
Flav: right they just have think differently and they have a different vision for the world

00:59:29.86
Ricky: Yeah.

00:59:33.82
Flav: Like. Bye. to To this day. um I'm not, i I'll probably never vote again. In the times that I have voted in my life, it's been Labour and once for Lib Dem.

00:59:44.80
Flav: in a protest against the war in Iraq.

00:59:47.30
Ricky: Oh, okay.

00:59:48.29
Flav: Uh… ah Yeah, I voted for Lib Dem in the local election because… ah They were against the war, the invasion of Iraq. and And obviously Tony Blair and whatnot have done it.

00:59:59.14
Flav: Uh, But… but Getting older is… is He's understanding it's not… it there isn't There isn't good and evil. i think people who are left wing. feel like they're the good.

01:00:12.68
Flav: in the world.

01:00:13.49
Ricky: i am good yeah

01:00:14.75
Flav: And people on the right.

01:00:16.48
Ricky: Bad, racist, poison.

01:00:17.62
Flav: Evil. yeah No, like far wrong.

01:00:18.40
Ricky: Yeah.

01:00:19.26
Flav: We're not talking about reformists there.

01:00:19.91
Ricky: I'm a fabric, disgusting.

01:00:21.38
Flav: Right center, yeah.

01:00:23.53
Ricky: You.

01:00:24.84
Flav: Um… I think the people on the left are are less willing to talk to the people on the right than the other way around.

01:00:30.20
Ricky: Hmm.

01:00:31.30
Flav: And yeah, so given a 16 year old who's just doesn't understand. Asshole. And like you say, give young people more credit. No, I don't want to give them more credit. I definitely don't want to give them the power to vote at 16.

01:00:43.16
Ricky: Okay, we've we we had a… um A reply. to one of our tweets. especially on the the voting side. policies on the economy and the environment have more effect on 16 year olds than they do a 70 year old

01:01:01.38
Flav: Yes.

01:01:01.47
Ricky: And have you ever spoken to an old person? They're fucking mental. So I quite ah quite like that. And I see where I hadn't thought of it, ah especially that the 70-year-old.

01:01:12.17
Ricky: How long really are they going to be? here And they're probably set in their own ways of growing up.

01:01:14.71
Flav: No, no, true. that

01:01:18.31
Ricky: and you have this You know, the the tinted glasses of, oh, I remember in the 80s, we could leave our front doors open. Nonces didn't exist, you know.

01:01:28.45
Flav: Yeah, I'm not talking about 70 year olds though, am I?

01:01:28.57
Ricky: It was. a No, no.

01:01:30.09
Flav: i'm I'm talking about all the people in the middle. I'm not 70, I'm 45.

01:01:33.61
Ricky: No.

01:01:34.69
Flav: the The environment and these decisions are gonna still going to affect large parts of my life. I just don't want… position i don't like I don't want policies to be made. Bye. Uprisings of 16 year olds.

01:01:46.25
Ricky: Right, okay, now I get that.

01:01:46.87
Flav: because the… the decisions that they're going to make. You're talking about… Amelie.

01:01:51.17
Ricky: Yeah. Yeah.

01:01:52.04
Flav: What? will.

01:01:53.92
Ricky: Yeah.

01:01:54.51
Flav: 16. The town. know enough they haven't lived enough they haven't gone through the processes you you get some mental mental mad intelligent 16 year olds who do understand it

01:01:58.86
Ricky: No. nay

01:02:04.43
Ricky: Yeah.

01:02:05.03
Flav: But the vast majority of them just want, just they're fucking wanking. and and then and And having their first… Fucking pill. or whatever they might be doing.

01:02:12.51
Ricky: I'll go. Scary foot, yeah.

01:02:14.40
Flav: Huh?

01:02:15.06
Ricky: That's just scary for

01:02:16.01
Flav: Well, when did you do your first pill?

01:02:18.54
Ricky: I was later. I was late.

01:02:22.26
Flav: You smoking weed, 16?

01:02:23.20
Ricky: 19. Somewhere around there. um Yeah.

01:02:28.36
Flav: my My point is is that you don't, they don't.

01:02:28.35
Ricky: Yeah, 16.

01:02:30.52
Flav: I appreciate what… that What the gentleman, the person who said that is that that obviously the policies that are being made by people that are much older than a 16-year-old who don't really understand what being a 16-year-old in the modern era is about affects their lives.

01:02:34.28
Ricky: a

01:02:44.04
Flav: You know, and… and ah you know more than it does someone who's 70s, you know. made his money or made their money and and and living off the benefits of it like my dad gets angry about stuff that shouldn't concern him

01:02:57.24
Ricky: Hmm.

01:02:57.78
Flav: It's angry because he's angry at things that are that are happening. and then And I'm like, you've got… you You never have to worry about money. You will never in your entire life have to worry about money.

01:03:07.70
Ricky: Yeah.

01:03:08.20
Flav: You have this lovely house. You live so far away from all the shit that makes you angry.

01:03:13.45
Ricky: Yeah.

01:03:14.73
Flav: And they… You're walking around. i so I think I said this last week. He's walking around his house angry. at Andy Burnham who doesn't know he fucking exists and will never know he exists.

01:03:22.55
Ricky: Yeah.

01:03:24.93
Flav: Kiss the armor.

01:03:26.39
Ricky: Yeah.

01:03:27.18
Flav: Why are you angry? Why are you allowing yourself to be angry? anyway so um I think he's 75. He doesn't have to. worry about these things and and actually politics should be more about future proofing for our younger generation.

01:03:43.28
Flav: For sure. But I don't think you get to a… but to the most productive version of society. Bye.

01:03:49.44
Ricky: 16.

01:03:49.46
Flav: asking 16 year olds how to do it.

01:03:51.53
Ricky: Yeah, i no, I get that. I get that. I just thought it was ah it was it was a good kind of… a

01:03:56.70
Flav: Yeah.

01:03:57.26
Ricky: like devil's advocate as to as to say that um we're just going to finish on this last email hi ricky and flab love the pod and i always look forward to a monday morning when you upload I think that a true sign of being an adult and mature is quite simple. It's letting go of things you can't control and truly being comfortable with the person you are. Not worrying about things you can't control and just ensuring that your circle, family, wife, kids, friends, etc. are safe.

01:04:26.17
Ricky: looked after. and healthy i was chasing the pounds in my 20s and not prioritizing my family at all in my 30s i made sure i built my life And now I'm 40, I really couldn't care less about ah the opinions of others.

01:04:40.79
Ricky: getting involved in unnecessary drama and understanding that not everyone in life will be like you. Let it go. smile and make sure your circle is happy and that is all you need thanks boys

01:04:53.78
Flav: Absolutely. 100 % categorically correct.

01:04:57.66
Ricky: Okay. Good. Leave it on that. um We have a dilemma. called Should I Come Clean? And something only you know. It's… terminal The topic for next week is going to be the Britpop era. Funny you mentioned Tony Blair. Started in 93.

01:05:14.59
Ricky: hitting its peak in 95, ending in 97, Oasis V Player. suede pulp and a whole host of other bands the culture of cool britannia uh the answer to the american-led grunge and shoegay scene tony blair's new labor And of course, we cannot forget the Spice Girls in all of this.

01:05:33.25
Flav: Mate, I'm looking forward to that. like i think Whenever I feel nostalgic about the past, it's that era.

01:05:39.16
Ricky: Exactly. ah When I was looking at it and I was just like this. probably The stuff that is in my head, that the the things that are firing when I was at school and the culture and.

01:05:51.16
Ricky: oasis coming into the scenes and harry and you know all of that stuff yeah i was just like this was a time when I was so happy.

01:05:59.45
Flav: Yeah. And I…

01:06:00.53
Ricky: Um,

01:06:01.21
Flav: We'll be out.

01:06:02.51
Ricky: So if you've got any stories or anything that you want to send in about the Britpop era. Send it in to ladsanon. pod at gmail .com and we will read it out i must remember to say that that came in from, that topic suggestion was from… one of our patreons ah he will kill me if i if i you know picked his topic and i didn't mention it so thank you very much If you want to become a patron, patreon .com slash…

01:06:30.45
Ricky: Lads Anon Pod. I nearly said fine cut then. um We are going to go into. Where is it? Oh, God.

01:07:12.17
Ricky: Should I come clean? Hi, Rick and Flav. Hope you're well. Got a little dilemma for you both. I've been seeing this girl recently. We've known each other for about 10 years now. We went to different schools, but had mutual friends. We always got along well, but never anything more.

01:07:30.10
Ricky: Last year we bumped into each other uptown after not seeing each other for years, got chatting and hit it off. I texted her the next morning to meet up again, but she'd recently just come out of a long-term relationship, so she said the time wasn't right.

01:07:45.68
Ricky: a year A year on, my mate saw her uptown again and they got talking. He was wingmanning me. and arsed her what she thought of me she said the ball was in my court So I dropped her a message and we arranged to meet up.

01:08:02.09
Ricky: cut to the chase we've seen each other a few times now and getting on like a house on fire here's where the problem comes in About four years ago, there was this other girl I fooled around with a few times. That girl is now seeing the new girls. Brava!

01:08:19.07
Ricky: Yes, I read that right. And I'm fearful this could completely fuck things up. I feel a like I need to tell the new girl as it would just weigh on my conscience. Interested to get your guys thoughts.

01:08:31.61
Ricky: so that So his missy, well, his this girl that he's seeing. Her brother. His girlfriend. is a girl that… He.

01:08:43.08
Ricky: fooled around with four years ago I don't know how… how much fooling around they did, whether it was kissing and just a, you know, a bit of seeing each other, whether it was the full.

01:08:53.86
Ricky: he thinks the things they're up

01:08:56.57
Flav: So what is he saying? What are we… What's the question?

01:08:59.69
Ricky: So the the dilemma is, does he tell his girlfriend? Bye. You know your brother. You know his missus.

01:09:06.32
Flav: Yeah.

01:09:07.05
Ricky: Aye. you know.

01:09:09.38
Flav: Why would he tell her?

01:09:10.94
Ricky: Well that's the thing, will it come out? Why didn't you tell me?

01:09:15.30

01:10:57.22
Ricky: It's terminal. Hi, Ricky and Flav. Love the pod and thanks for all the content on lads and the fighting cock over the many years. Something only I know as follows. It was my first proper job where I had to travel and my first trip was only a few weeks into the job. And me and two colleagues were heading overseas. luckily you The day before I was due to fly, I'd been feeling really unwell. vomiting and diarrhea but I didn't want to pull out of the trip at the last minute.

01:11:26.55
Ricky: So against my better judgement, I dragged myself to the airport the next morning. I was walking to the terminal when I felt a bit of gas. Without thinking I figured I could quietly let out a fart.

01:11:39.35
Ricky: I was very very wrong. I shout myself. I made a beeline for the toilets. where I discovered I'd completely soiled my undies. That sounds that sounds Australian, soared my undies.

01:11:53.63
Ricky: i threw them in the bin cleaned myself up as best as i could and then headed off to catch my flight Come on, they start. with the little boys bouncing about. Somehow I made it through the flight and to my hotel without anyone noticing anything.

01:12:09.86
Ricky: after a shower i went to my luggage to get a fresh pair of underwear that's when i realized That in the stress of being so unwell. The date prior. I hadn't packed any e so for the rest of the week I wore a suit with no underwear to numerous business meetings. I've never checked that my fly was undone. So I've never checked that my fly was done up so many times.

01:12:33.54
Ricky: I made it through the entire week without any further incident. A week or so later, when I was back home, I was daydreaming about the previous week when i thought suddenly and when a thought suddenly stopped me in my tracks.

01:12:45.20
Ricky: Why the fuck did I not just go out and buy new underwear on my trip? Why am I so dumb? Was there some some subconscious part of me that secretly enjoyed the risk of going commando all week? Regardless, two life lessons when travelling.

01:13:00.49
Ricky: Don't shoot yourself. Number two. always pack underwear And that. It's something only I know.

01:13:08.06
Flav: There you go.

01:13:08.76
Ricky: Well, I mean… Yeah, why didn't you buy underwear while you were there? I couldn't… I could not. Where. trousers or jeans without underwear

01:13:18.98
Flav: Da. Nah, nah.

Ricky: I mean, like the little… You know, go for it, Wade. Bit dribble now.

01:13:24.67
Flav: Yeah.

01:13:24.58
Ricky: Just imagine that's going to soak through the trousers.

01:13:27.01
Flav: Yeah.

01:13:26.98
Ricky: Maybe we're going to see. That's very dangerous.

01:13:29.48

Ricky: Very dangerous.
